I am a freelance writer, saxophonist, and recovering academic. I finished my PhD in American Studies at the University of Kansas in 2014, where I studied jazz criticism, black music, and cultural and critical theory. My day job is writing book jacket marketing copy at a university press. My writing has been published in Downbeat, Point of Departure, Earshot Jazz, American Studies, Jazz Perspectives, and other publications.
