SO WHAT: A JAZZ ANTI-CRITICISM

Give the drummer some: Henry Cole

In May I was fortunate to see the Miguel Zenon Quartet play a set in Omaha. I plan to write up something on that show soon, but in the meantime, below is a video I found on YouTube that highlights Zenon’s drummer, Henry Cole.  While the show was fantastic in many different ways, one of the things that stood out to me was Cole’s performance.  What struck me about watching him play was how relaxed he was, and how effortless his playing appeared.  This video picks up in the middle of a performance of “Villa Palmeras” and focuses solely on Cole.  What I love about this video is that one can see and hear everything he is doing.  I find the visual element of this performance especially striking, as to my eyes, the kit has become an extension of his body.  Enjoy.
